Congratulations to Dr Patricia Dodd-Racher
on the publication of her new book

"Empty Plates Tomorrow?:

Why We Face A Food Shortage and
What We Can Do About It.
"

It makes very interesting reading - recommended.

185 pages; quality trade paperback (softcover); catalogue #06-3024; ISBN 1-4251-1265-X; US$17.30 , C$19.90, EUR13.93, £9.95. Trafford Publishing.

Empty Plates Tomorrow? is about the risk of food shortages. It highlights the links between food supply, fossil fuel extraction, industrialisation, environmental pollution, climate change, and political and business power.

About the Book

Food and water supplies will diminish during the 21st century. Environmental degradation will cut crop yields. The end of cheap oil will raise the costs of industrial farming. Global warming, fanned by carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels, is already altering climatic zones and weather patterns, creating new dangers for farmers.

Empty Plates Tomorrow? considers the global outlook for food production, with detailed examples from two contrasting nations. Firstly, Wales, where globalisation has made environmentally-friendly mixed farming totally uneconomic, and secondly Cuba, where in the 1990s the socialist government promoted urban farms to overcome hunger, but has since drawn back from promoting food self-sufficiency in favour of using cheap oil from Venezuela to fuel industrial growth. The oil will not last forever. It may not last more than 30 or 40 years. In coming decades the fossil energy to make synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, and to power farm machinery and freight vehicles, will have diminished to an uncertain trickle. We will not be able to take anything for granted: not fresh water, not rainfall, not even the land we live on if it is anywhere near sea level, because melting glaciers will pour vast quantities of water into the oceans. A hotter world will make farming hugely more difficult. We can take some steps to moderate the impact of these threats to our food security, including re-localising food production to minimise food miles, and returning to organic farming to cut applications of energy-guzzling synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. More of us will need to work in agriculture, and all of us will have to slash the amount of energy we use. Empty Plates Tomorrow? highlights the damaging interactions between fossil fuel extraction, industrialisation, environmental pollution, climate change, and political and business power, but also points to the vital role of individual pioneers who can transform public opinion.

Claudia has been busy with her guitar pupils raising money for Buskaid

Buskaid header

Buskaid is a charitable trust founded in 1992 by British viola player Rosemary Nalden, in response to a BBC radio interview she heard, highlighting the plight of a group of young string players in Diepkloof, Soweto. She enlisted the support of a few of her musician friends to do a massive busk at 16 British Rail stations throughout London. In two hours they raised £6000 for the benefit of the young township musicians. Since then several hundred distinguished musicians have participated in a further four “Busks”.

It is an organization for musicians of all levels who wish to raise money by busking to help children from the poorest areas in South Africa to buy instruments and have lessons.

The students are aged from eight to twenty-one. There are at the moment 64 students having lessons. Demand, however, far exceeds capacity and well over 1000 youngsters have had to be turned away since the project started.

To support this endeavour Claudia has been setting up busks at the schools where she teaches.

Little Green Men

by Rex Anderson

Somewhere out there is intelligent life. They are not unlike you and I. They go to college. They play musical instruments. They use buses. They go to work, drink hot chocolate, fall in love and eat Sunday lunch. And that's just in East Croydon.

This is a story about sex, drugs and rock'n'roll, except that there is scant mention of drugs and only an oblique reference to rock'n'roll. It's also about things that go “WHOOOOOOOOSH” and “AAAAAAAAARGH” and people who would be more happy in a situation comedy had they not been confined to these pages. You want to know what it's about? It's about 200 pages. Why don't you read it and find out?

Eilon, February 26, 2005

Hello friends

Last week I had the opportunity to attend a gathering at Amos and Tsivik Kosta's home. They were hosting a rare visit by Amiram and Beelha, who have entrenched themselves in Toronto, where they have resided since the late 1980s. The planned social scope of their visit was reduced by the poor health of Beelha's brother, who is battling asbestos poisoning. From her account, the prospects are rather grim. Other than that, their oldest daughter Anat has given them a grandson, and the other two children, Inbal and Assaf are either at university or immersed in academic careers.

Yafah was also present and I inquired about Mati and Cliff. I was saddened to learn that Cliff died a year ago to cancer. Yafah told me that the couple had divorced and Cliff's death occurred in Scotland. He was buried in England.

To jog people's memory, Cliff and Mati lived in Adamit in 1971-72. They were from Dan, hence the Yafah connection. Mati, originally from Argentina, worked with me and Yochanon on the grounds. Cliff managed the banana plantation and was an avid lover of jazz.

I had occasion to bump into Cliff at Mapam functions in the early 1990s. I think that at the time he was employed in Dan's organic citrus grove [citrus, is that possible?].

In other more salubrious news, I learned that Adamit approved the sale of Metad, their metal works factory to Amos and a former employee in a partnership.

Hello friends

I'm sure that everyone has their memories of "mishloahiim". I am sure that few miss it. Love-Barry

Yoav and his girlfriend Edit were here on Saturday. Yoav writes:

On our way back to TA we had to stop in a traffic jam caused by a "hefetz hashud" [a suspicious package]. After a while of waiting people around us got tired, turned off their engines and exited their cars to get some fresh air. While we were sitting bored in our car thinking of something to do we noticed that on the lane to our right was a truck load of chickens being led to their final doom. Quickly we took out a piece of paper and used it to express the last thoughts of the chickens.
Edit did the hanging, and I took the pictures.
Everyone behind the truck thought it hilarious.

Hello
Hi How are you all?
Rina ... who unfortunately is not in good terms with the web
told me I should answer your nice letter. So I am.
It was very nice to catch up on your family news and to show your family
web site to Lyrie, who is my 7 years old princess.
She heard a lot from my mother about Nelly, who's stories were read to
her. Now she was delighted to see her picture.

We are still here in our crazy crazy country. waking every morning in our
quaint suburbia village overlooking the Mediterranean, were we live our
seemingly quiet life, in a nice little house, with 2 kids, a dog and a
sedan.
It is so weird and surreal to have such a "normal" life were there are
armed bodyguards in every country club, school and super market, and my kid
knows she is never never going on a public bus.
The newest member of our family is Romy who joined us on 1.1.03
Rina still regrets her not being a boy. But the rest of us are delighted.
Rina is still her self, still flying...but times goes on...
Lyrie is the soon to be cool teen, she will be 8 in August but even kids
here age quickly. Last time we went abroad she asked if it is safer there
and was happy to find out nobody explodes.
Yaron is working at G.E. and has just finished his maternity leave.
I am a teaching assistant at Haifa University, and now that I have
recovered from my pregnancy, trying to finish my M.A.
I am sending you our latest family pictures. It was taken after Purim but
has nothing to do with it. And one of Romy. knowing all babies are cute,
but mine is cuter.
Happy Pessah
Warm regards, and all the best to all of you
Gali

E-mail from Peter Strop:

News from Tucson:

Dear family friends:

I finally started to write this 2002 family newsletter. It took me a while because of my laziness, and hesitance to write in English anything other than business mails, but also because I felt like I should wait until the really last day of 2002 to make sure that a really good year will not get spoiled by something at the very end. (As you can see I am not completely over two previous years that had few bad surprises for us).

To start with something bad in 2001 turning into very good in 2002, I should mention that Dasa recovered completely from her stroke that she had after a car crash about a year ago. She recovered completely in very short time and started to work again at the University in January. She still works in the Dept. Pharmacology, University of Arizona. Another good news was that her heart function improved substantially, becoming almost normal, and she also recovered after her colon cancer surgery. As you can see on some of the pictures displayed on our family web page (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/strop/), that we put together quickly yesterday to complement this newsletter, she is in a very good mood, active and enjoying life. This is even more true for our little grand-daughter Veronika (now 27 months old), who had open heart surgery in May 2001. She recovered and improved extremely quickly. She did not only catch up to her peers, she has endless energy and always seeks new adventures.

Pavel, after five years at the California Institute of Technology, defended his PhD thesis in April and graduated in June (first two pictures are taken in his lab after graduation ceremony, the 3rd photo is Pavel and his friend relaxing in their house in Pasadena). He worked in the protein crystallography and protein design fields. In the November issue of Science they published a structure of membrane ion channel. After graduation, Pavel took a long, four months break, before he started as a postdoc at Stanford University this October. During his time off, he did a lot of biking (picture 4 & 5 are from Utah), than lived in a van and traveled along the west coast to Canada and back, doing adrenalin sports like rock climbing and white water kayaking with his friends (pictures 6-13). After two weeks hiking in Alaska with his girlfriend Lisa (no pictures released) he spent two weeks in Prague and at our summer cottage with his sister Jitka, her husband Jacob and little Veronika (pictures 14 - 19). During his adventure travels we were in touch from time to time, but we did not see him until November when he flew to Tucson, and of course he also came to Tucson for Christmas (photos 28 -35).

This year I did not feel that I spent that much time away from our home in Tucson, and we did get to see our kids more often. I have a responsibility for the Biology group in Tucson, but I am not in charge of the Aventis HTS group in New Jersey anymore. It was sometimes a bit more fun, but I had to spent more than half of my time in NJ hotels, and on the plane. During the first half of this year I still had to fly to Europe quite often and few times I visited Prague to see Veronika, Jitka and Jacob.

In the summer we planned a long holiday together (Dasa, Jitka, Jacob, Veronika and myself) mainly hiking in Sumava (Bomische Wald). The four of us (without Jacob who had to work for Ixos, his German computer software company) then went to a little Greek village at Rhodos where we spent a week or so. It was so nice (sorry no pictures) that we decided to spend another ten days around Thanksgiving at US Virgin Islands (on St. John island) (photos 20 - 27). Jitka and Veronika flew to Tucson and than after a week with Dasa and myself to St. Thomas. Jacob came from Prague. It was really fantastic, very few people, bungalow on the beach, wonderful sea with sandy beaches and tropical vegetation, crystal clear water with lots of corals and fish. Nice weather, beautiful swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving (just Jacob & Jitka) made us decide that next year we must go again. For Jacob and Jitka it was quite a change when they returned for Christmas from pleasant tropical temperatures to -20 deg C in Prague.

The only drawback was that I was promised to loose about 8-10 pounds when I will snorkel for few hours each day. To my disappointment I did not lose any weight, so I got a stationary bike for Christmas (picture 34). I hope that I covered almost everything, except maybe I forgot to mention that we have (for four years already) a big but very gentle and kind German shepherd Danny. The other dogs on the pictures are his friends Miky who is with us for Christmas since her owners are traveling to Europe, and Jitka’s retriever Buddy.

We wish you Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

And so it goes... as Kurt Vonnegut used to say.

News Bulletin from another Eichner Family - November 27th 2002:

Nina attends Michael Hall School in Forest Row, a Steiner-Waldorf School,
where she is now studying for her GCSE exams. She's been going there
since she started in play group when she was three years old, she's now 15!
Nina played in her first senior orchestra on Oct.19th when she was invited
to play double bass for the Mid-Sussex Sinfonia at Ardingly College
performing a programme of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. She will be
auditioning for the East Sussex Youth Orchestra in December, despite this
her main interest in life is listening to the likes of Red Hot Chilly Peppers
(a rock band for those of you with empty nests) and riding her pony
with a friend on Ashdown Forest.
Joshi also played in his first senior orchestra last Sunday Nov.24th,
playing second violin in the Worth Community Orchestra at Worth Abbey. He
was the youngest player in a very adult band. Joshi is settling in well at
Worth School after 10 years at Michael Hall. He particularly likes the
sporting activities and plays for the school teams for his age in cricket
and basketball. The downside is the extremely long school day, he
leaves home at 7.45 and returns on a short day at 6.45pm. He
often stays on at school for music rehearsals and sports clubs and
then gets home at 9.30! This plus Saturday mornings at school means
we don't get to see much of him. He plans to make loads of money this
Christmas by busking with a cello playing friend at the shopping mall
in Tunbridge Wells.
Heidi is about to make her long term dream come true by buying
a flat in Munich, her home town. At the moment the flat is no more than
a big hole in the ground and some pretty pictures, but when it is completed
at the end of next year it will be situated about 10 minutes walk away from
the European Patent Office where she works as a free-lance simultaneous
interpreter. She is in Munich at the moment as I write this, no doubt admiring
the view adjacent to the hole. Let's hope it looks as good with a 50
flat block filling the void.
I'm semi-retired. Alpnet, the company I worked for, albeit very part-time,
was bought by a competitor in January this year leaving me fairly free,
after months of very hectic negotiating, legal contracts and nerve racking
tight rope walking (in a business sense), Alpnet was on the verge of
insolvency when it was acquired. I'm relieved it's over and while waiting to
see what further challenges life offers me I'm helping Michael Hall with
it's major building programme, new sports hall etc.
That's the news from this branch of the family tree for today,

Best, Mike Eichner
